Schools of Sanctuary - Edmund Rice England

Schools of Sanctuary is a growing network of more than 300 primary and secondary schools all committed to supporting the thousands of young people seeking sanctuary in the UK, creating a culture of welcome and inclusion whilst raising awareness of the issues faced by refugees and asylum seekers.  Here at Somerville, we are proud to be a School of Sanctuary.

What is a refugee?

What is an asylum seeker?

Exploring Cultures from around the world

After watching authentic performances by individuals from Somali, Chinese, and Pakistani cultures, children gained a deeper understanding and respect for these diverse cultures. The performances, which showcased traditional music, dance, and storytelling, allowed the children to witness the unique customs, values, and artistic expressions that are integral to each culture. By experiencing these vibrant displays first-hand, the children were able to connect with the performers' emotions, history, and identity, which helped break down stereotypes and misconceptions. The performances offered a rich, immersive experience that highlighted the beauty of cultural diversity, fostering an appreciation for the distinct yet equally valuable traditions that shape each community. Through this exposure, the children learned to embrace cultural differences, cultivating a sense of respect, curiosity, and inclusivity.

Weaving Cultures Together

Weaving can be a powerful tool for helping children understand and respect different cultures by exposing them to the diverse traditions and techniques that exist across the world. Through the hands-on process of weaving, children at Somerville engaged with cultural practices that have been passed down through generations, learning about the materials, patterns, and symbolic meanings behind different textile arts. This creative activity allowed them to appreciate the value of craftsmanship and the role of weaving in various societies, including the intricate tapestries of Asia, the beautiful floral embroidery from Romania to the colourful textiles of Africa. As children explore these diverse forms of expression, they develop empathy, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, fostering respect for the customs, history, and identities of others.

Somerville Harvest Collection 2024

This year, Somerville Primary school have organised a collection for Sparkhill Foodbank.  This foodbank was chosen because of their links with the community.  As well as providing support for local people in crisis, they also have a refugee drop in and resource centre which is vital in our local area.  We would like to offer a huge thank you to our very generous school community.  Together we have managed to collect 23 crates worth of food for people in crisis!

Orange Heart Appeal

Somerville Pupils have created orange hearts to show their support for refugees from all over the world.   Pupils from Reception through to Year 6 took part in this project.  Our school council took these hearts to Small Heath library where they put them on display so that our pupil voice can reach the wider community.
