Homework – Year 1

Reading

  • Reading remains the most important part of your child’s homework and they will be expected to read regularly at home. All children have a ‘free choice’ book which they bring home everyday, plus another book which is appropriate to their ability.

  • Please find opportunities to read with your child and write comments in their Reading Record book each time your child brings it home. If time is short and you cannot write a comment it is still helpful if you can write the title of the book and the date it was shared.

  • It is expected that children in Year 1 read for at least 5-10 minutes each night.

  • a recommended  list of books attached.

Number Bonds and Multiplication

  • Children also need constant support with learning their number bonds and multiplication facts.

  • Please find opportunities to ask questions relating to these areas, this will support them with their Mental Maths.

Bug Club

  • As a school we have purchased ‘Bug Club’ which is an exciting online reading resource for children.
  • All children have a username and password (which you will find in their Reading Records) and they can access a range of motivating books and comprehension games at home.
  • You can also go to www.oxfordowl.co.uk for further FREE resources for reading and maths.

Other Homework

In addition, your child will also receive the following:

  • Spellings as appropriate

  • Either a maths activity or a literacy activity each week

Sometimes the homework may be talk/think homework and may not have a written outcome.

At the beginning or end of term, the frequency and quantity of homework may differ due to other events and activities taking place.

 

Other ways to support your child

  • Take your child to the library and help them choose suitable books;

  • Provide the right environment in which they can do their homework;

  • Ensure the time is right for homework – they are not too tired, too busy, etc.

Reading Records - What to write in the records

To help create a love of books it is important to try and write something positive about the book your child has brought to you. For example, ‘The pictures were lovely’, ‘The ending was really funny’, etc.

Comments about your child’s approach to reading or sharing the book need to be encouraging. For example, ‘Great reading, you really used the pictures to help you’, or ‘I liked the way you worked out that word by using your sounds’, or ‘I liked the way you read that again when it didn’t sound quite right’. The sorts of comments you make will depend to a large extent on your child’s stage of development and so will change overtime.

Year 1 Recommended Reading list

This list is intended to be a guide to books suitable for children in Year 1. The list covers a range of genres. Some of the texts are more difficult to read than others and care should be taken when choosing the books for enjoyment and ability. Please discuss the books your child reads and remember that although a book might be difficult for your child to read, he/she will probably still enjoy having it read by an adult.
